Apprenticeship

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a structured workforce training model that combines on-the-job experience with related instruction, allowing employees to develop the skills and knowledge needed to become qualified professionals in their trade.

An apprentice is an employee who is formally enrolled in a registered apprenticeship program and receives supervised, work-based training while progressing toward completion of the program. Upon successful completion of a registered apprenticeship, the apprentice receives a nationally recognized credential from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Federal Apprenticeship Program

ABC Central California has partnered with an out-of-state, U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) registered apprenticeship program to provide our members with an additional workforce development option and help contractors meet applicable Skilled and Trained Workforce requirements.

This partnership allows eligible ABC Central California member companies to enroll employees in a federally registered apprenticeship program across a variety of construction and skilled trades.

This is a federally approved program and is separate from California's state apprenticeship system (DIR). Contractors should always review the specific requirements of their project or contract to determine whether federal apprenticeship credentials meet the applicable workforce requirements.

This Federal Apprenticeship Program is an employer-sponsored program and is not open for individual public enrollment.

To participate:
- The employer must be a current ABC Central California member in good standing.
- Employees must be sponsored and enrolled through their employer.
- Employers must complete the required program orientation and enrollment documents.
- Employees must complete the appropriate application and eligibility requirements for their trade.

Companies that are not currently ABC Central California members must become members before participating in the program.
